How to Play Pick 3 in Vermont

Playing Pick 3 in Vermont is easy, but you have a lot more options than in most other lotteries as you can choose whether to select one, two or three numbers. If you do pick three, you can decide whether to try and match the numbers exactly or in any order.

Find out more about all the available play types further down the page, or follow the step-by-step guide below to buy tickets. Drawings are held daily at 1:10 p.m. and 6:59 p.m., with ticket sales cutting off at 1:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

Specify whether you will be playing the Day draw, the Evening draw, or both. It is possible to play your numbers in up to 42 consecutive drawings (or 21 if you are just playing at one time of day).

Select your own numbers from 0 to 9, or get a Quick Pick if you would prefer to let the computer terminal generate a random set for you. Each digit is drawn from a separate field, so the same number can appear multiple times in a draw.

Pick 3 allows you to choose how much to bet. You can wager as little as $0.50, or in $0.50 increments up to $5. The more you pay, the more you can win.

When you pay for a Pick 3 ticket, the total cost is your bet amount multiplied by how many sets of numbers you play and the number of drawings entered. Check that your ticket has the correct selections on it, then sign the back of it and keep it safe until the draw takes place. You are allowed to cancel a Pick 3 ticket, but only at the location where you bought it.

Play Types

The type of bet you select dictates what prize you are playing for. It is up to you whether you want to play for the biggest prizes, or a lower payout that has better odds of winning.

Straight

For a Straight play, you pick three numbers in the order you think they will be drawn. You need to match all three winning digits exactly in the correct positions to win.

Box

Unlike a Straight, you win a Box play as long as all your numbers are drawn. The order they are selected in does not matter. Box plays can be differentiated as 3-Way or 6-Way.

Straight/Box

A Straight/Box splits the cost of your bet so that half your money goes on one play type and half on the other. If you match the winning numbers exactly, you win the full prize. If they all appear, but not in the order you have selected, you still win the Box part of the prize.

Front Pair

Known as a 2-number play, this is a bet on the first two winning numbers. You have to get them in exact order to win. For example, if you play 12X and the numbers drawn are 12X, you win the associated prize, but if the winning digits are 21X, the bet is lost.

Back Pair

This is just the same as a Front Pair play, except that you are betting on the second and third numbers so you can leave the first column blank when you fill in your playslip.

Single Digit

A Single Digit wager requires you to pick just one number and specify which position you are saying it will be drawn in, for example 7XX (first), X7X (second) or XX7 (third). You need to match it in the correct place in order to win.

Prizes

The most you can win in Play 3 is $500, if you play a Straight and wager $1. The other bet types might not offer such large payouts, but the odds of winning are better. Go to the page for a full list of everything you can win for each play type.

To win a prize, you need to match the numbers as you are required to do so by the conditions of your bet type, for example matching them in the correct order if playing a Straight. You can win up to 500x your play amount in Pick 3. Go to the Payouts and Odds page to find out exactly how much you can win for each type of bet, along with the chances of success for each one.
